As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of UNDP in Kosovo and the 20th anniversary of the partnership with the EU, we are reflecting on our joint work on reviving and rehabilitating intangible cultural and religious heritage.

With EU support for nearly a decade, UNDP Kosovo has demonstrated dedication to cultural heritage preservation across Kosovo through numerous initiatives. Collaborating closely with institutions, CSOs, and residents from all communities and diverse backgrounds – our aim is not only to restore and revitalize rich cultural heritage but to also educate generations about its significance as a foundation for social cohesion and sustainable tourism development.

Kosovo boasts a rich cultural heritage, encompassing historical, religious, and vernacular sites, alongside numerous natural treasures. For the past eight years, UNDP has been working with a range of allies – including grassroots organisations, central and local institutions, and development partners - on preserving, rehabilitating, and reviving both tangible and intangible cultural heritage. This work serves as a catalyst for social cohesion, intercommunity acceptance, and socio-economic development and empowerment.

Through the EU-funded development projects which use cultural heritage as a positive driver for change, UNDP has consistently supported efforts to document Kosovo’s cultural and natural heritage, aiming to further develop tourism and attract visitors. A key focus has been given to the use of digital solutions, providing easily accessible platforms to explore and appreciate this heritage. Emphasis was placed on developing rural tourism, highlighting services such as guesthouses, restaurants, wineries, handicraft shops, and presenting traditional cuisine, and traditional garments.
