In Tirana, amid a blend of old and new, stands “Emin Duraku” school—a solid symbol of education in a neighbourhood where tradition meets modernity. The school, with its freshly painted, colourful walls, gleaming floors, and sunlit classrooms, does not just stand tall, it shines. 

This renewed energy is thanks to the “EU4Schools” Programme, funded by the European Union and implemented by UNDP Albania, a transformative project born from the rubble of the 2019 earthquake that shook the very foundations of education in Albania.

These schools are building dreams.

"Before the new school was built, we had to study in makeshift classrooms," says Bjorna, a 14-year-old pupil with a shy smile. "It was hard to focus, especially in the winter when it was cold. Now, our school has heating, and we even have a spacious and fully equipped gym and a playground. I love coming to school every day!"

Her teacher Lindita echoes her sentiments. "The new facilities have completely changed the way we teach. The advanced laboratories allow us to conduct experiments and hands-on learning that we could only dream of before. The modern amenities have not only improved our educational process but have also inspired our students to aim higher."

Parents, too, have noticed the remarkable difference. “The new school environment has made my son more engaged and more eager to learn. It’s amazing how much a contemporary school, can impact a child's education."- says Arben, one parent.

As the “EU4Schools” Programme continues to make headlines, UNDP’s social media platforms are flooded with requests: Can you also come and reconstruct our school? Can you bring computers to our classrooms? Your schools have gyms, playgrounds, and sports courts. They even have heating and cooling systems. We all deserve such good facilities. 

And they are right. The EU4Schools facilities stand tall as shining examples of how educational environments should be built. They are not just schools; they are the cornerstone of a better future for Albania’s youth.

A well-constructed school does more than just provide a place to learn; it fosters an environment where students can thrive. The advanced laboratories in chemistry, biology, physics, IT, and arts and music enable pupils to explore their interests and develop practical skills. The comprehensive amenities, including libraries, multifunctional rooms, and psychological and medical facilities, support pupils’ overall well-being. And the inclusion of sports fields and accessible facilities ensures that every child, regardless of their abilities, can participate fully in school life.

In this nurturing environment, pupils are not just learning; they are growing, dreaming, and preparing to take on any challenges. The high-end internal engineering networks, efficient lighting, energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, and safety measures like CCTV surveillance and fire protection systems create a safe and comfortable space for learning.

Partnerships Are the Way of the Future

The “EU4Schools” Programme, with its €75 million investment, is living proof of the power of collaboration. Implemented by UNDP Albania in partnership with the Government of Albania and local governments, the programme has already completed 57 out of 63 educational facilities, with a focus on two key principles: Build Back Better and Build Back Together.

These principles are more than just words. They are a commitment to creating stronger, safer, and more resilient schools that can withstand future challenges. The community's involvement in the design and reconstruction process ensures that the schools are built to meet the needs of those who use them daily.

As Albania looks to the future, the demand for quality education is clear. Every child deserves a safe, modern, and inclusive learning environment. The “EU4Schools” Programme is not just rebuilding schools; it is rebuilding hope, laying the foundations for a generation of young people ready to pursue their dreams just like their peers in the European Union.
