UNDP supports the development of peace infrastructure in the regions of Kyrgyzstan.

Osh, October 11, 2024 – Today, the first meeting of the newly established Public ConsultativeCouncils on Interethnic Relations and Social Cohesion (PCCs) was held in Osh city. The newly established PCCs will serve as collegial advisory bodies within district state administrations and city mayors' offices, forming the foundation for peace infrastructure at these administrative levels. The event brought together representatives from governmental and local self-governance bodies, experts, and community members to discuss key aspects of the PCCs' work.

Opening the event, Iskender Eshimbekov, Head of Interethnic Relations Department, Ministry of Culture, Information, Sports and Youth Policy of Ministry of Culture, information, sport and Youth policy of the Kyrgyz Republic, highlighted the Government's commitment to creating an environment that fosters a culture of dialogue and trust among all stakeholders.

"The establishment of Public Consultative Councils is not just a step towards improving dialogue between citizens and government entities; it is a strategic measure for building a resilient society. We are confident that these councils will effectively address social issues and strengthen trust at the local level,” emphasizedIskender Eshimbekov.

The composition and role of Public Counsultative Councils were redefined at the level of 23 multiethnic districts/cities by Order of the Ministry of Culture No. 484 dated July 15, 2024 UNDP is providing expert and advisory support in the institutional development of the PCCs, which are equipped to develop and implement comprehensive measures aimed at enhancing social cohesion and establishing sustainable dialogue mechanisms among diverse population groups.

The PCCs have the potential to become key multilateral platforms that promote community cohesion around values of cultural diversity, tolerance, and conflict prevention. UNDP's support in this process includes training for council members and the development of their plans and strategies that promote social cohesion and sustainable development.

Support for Public Consultative Councils is an important step in implementing the strategic documents of the Kyrgyz Republic on strengthening social cohesion and creating an inclusive society,” emphasized Alexandra Solovieva, UNDP Resident Representative in Kyrgyzstan .

The participants of the meeting expressed confidence that the work of the PCCs, supported by UNDP, will contribute to creating a safe and stable environment, which is an important step in the development of civil society and the addressing pressing social issues. The plans include the implementation of initiatives aimed at strengthening peace and consensus in the regions.
