UNDP and KSrelief empower communities through peacebuilding and economic initiatives in Yemen
December 5, 2024
Aden, Yemen: 05 December 2024 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) have successfully completed a project aimed at reducing vulnerability and strengthening resilience and social cohesion in crisis-affected communities across Yemen. The Social Protection to Provide Social Cohesion in Vulnerable Communities in Yemen Project enhanced the capacity of local authorities and community leaders through training programmes to equip them with the skills necessary to respond to community-based conflicts. With a total budget of USD $2 million, the project, which ran from June 2023 to November 2024, has reached communities across six districts in Aden, Hadramaut, and Lahj governorates.
The project provided vocational and entrepreneurship training to 630 Yemeni youth, equipping them with essential market-oriented skills for sustainable livelihoods. Among these trainees, 318 received in-kind start-up grants based on their business plans, enabling them to launch their own businesses.
“With the generous contribution from KSrelief, we’re supporting sustainable livelihoods in Yemen through vocational and entrepreneurship training, fostering a culture of inclusivity and community resilience. By empowering community leaders and local authorities, community-based conflict is better addressed, and safe spaces are supported to provide services to those in need,” says Zena Ali Ahmad, UNDP Yemen Resident Representative.
“We appreciate our partnership with UNDP on this project, which is a continuation of KSrelief’s efforts to support Yemeni communities by promoting peacebuilding and social cohesion while empowering women in the process to create more vibrant, inclusive, and resilient societies," says Dr. Jawaher Almuhanna, Director of the Community Support Department at KSrelief.
The success of the Social Protection to Provide Social Cohesion in Vulnerable Communities in Yemen Project, implemented with local partner Enjaz Foundation for Development, underscores the commitment of KSrelief and UNDP to supporting social cohesion and sustainable development in Yemeni communities.
