This year, a cohort of Afghan women obtained academic degrees in agriculture and celebrated graduation from Kazakh National Agrarian and Research University in Almaty. This milestone marks the culmination of the first phase of a regional UNDP initiative funded by the European Union and designed to empower Afghan women through education and training. Since November 2019, the initiative provided 50 Afghan women with knowledge and skills in fields critical to Afghanistan’s sustainable development.

The journey of our graduates is as diverse as their aspirations. Yet, this celebration of achievement takes place against a sobering backdrop. The situation for women in Afghanistan continues to deteriorate, with restrictions on education and employment now encroaching upon fundamental human rights. This crisis threatens not only the future of Afghan women but also the sustainable development in Central Asia.

Amid these challenges, inspiring stories of resilience emerge. Mursal, a recent graduate of this cross-border EU-UNDP initiative, exemplifies the spirit of hope and commitment needed to forge a brighter future for her country.

"My father inspired my decision to pursue a career in agriculture, emphasizing the crucial role of women specialists in securing food for the Afghan people. Now, as a young agriculturalist, my conviction in this career choice has only strengthened. The importance of sustainable agriculture and food security is clearer to me than ever,"
shares Mursal.
