About 3,000 pupils learned about energy efficiency and renewable energy resources
December 23, 2024
Around 3,000 pupils have gained insights into energy-saving measures and adopting an eco-friendly lifestyle. The interactive workshops were organized from August to December 2024 by Green City Lab Moldova, with support from Japan and UNDP Moldova.
The trainings, conducted across different regions of Moldova, combined a theoretical focus on energy efficiency and renewable energy sources like biomass with practical activities, including case studies, interactive games, and discussions. Eight workshops were conducted in summer camps, while other 72 were held in schools. Most locations were selected following a public call for registration.
“Saving energy is crucial, as we pollute the environment extensively and use all the resources we have. I learned that there are other ways to save electricity besides solar panels. We should save much more electricity as it ultimately benefits us the most,” says Cătălina, one of the participants in the training.
Another participant, Cezar, mentions that two years ago, his family installed solar panels and since then they have been able to observe the benefits firsthand. “After we installed these panels, energy consumption decreased, and our bills went down. The family savings are greater, allowing us to afford more things.”
“Energy efficiency is when we make sure to unplug chargers and appliances. When we heat something in the microwave, we don’t leave it plugged in. We need to take care of the Earth’s resources so we can enjoy them for a longer period,” concludes Sofia, who also participated in one of the training workshops.
Most participants were young people from rural areas and discussions focused on integrating good energy-saving practices as well as using biomass as a source of energy to tackle challenges. Additionally, ten trainings were organized for adults in different communities.
“Young people are very interested in topics related to sustainable development, but it is important to deliver the correct information and teach them how, each in their own homes, they can contribute to having a cleaner country, a healthier environment, and, consequently, to leave our descendants a healthier planet,” stated Irina Apostol, workshop facilitator, Green City Lab Moldova.
The training workshops were organized as part of the project “Multidimensional response to emerging human security challenges”, implemented by UNDP Moldova with funding from Japan. The project's overall objective is to protect human security and enhance the Republic of Moldova's capacity to manage complex and interconnected development issues exacerbated by the multidimensional crisis.
