
Jos, 11 February 2025 – In partnership with the Plateau State Government, the United Nations Development Programme hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the Agro-Innovation Makerspace in Jos. This initiative is part of UNDP’s broader effort to establish a network of innovation hubs that empower young people to develop and implement scalable solutions for sustainable development in Nigeria. The Makerspace aligns seamlessly with the state’s agenda, providing young innovators with the resources to create, test, and refine solutions that can drive local economic transformation.
Speaking during the launch of the Makerspace, His Excellency Caleb Mutfwang, Executive Governor of Plateau State pointed that, “Today, I am proud to announce a significant step in this journey. The launch of the Plateau Agro-Innovation Makerspace a pioneering initiative established in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme. This milestone is a testament to the power of strategic partnerships and the immense possibilities that arise when we work together toward a common vision.”
The Makerspace in Plateau State will have an Agro-Tech focus providing an innovative facility designed to harness cutting-edge technology for enhancing agricultural practices. The Jos Agro-Innovation Makerspace will give entrepreneurs, inventors, and artisans the tools to turn ideas into prototypes, prototypes into businesses, and businesses into industries. The space will also have an agro-processing component dedicated to transforming raw agricultural products into value-added goods, thereby enhancing food security and supporting local economies. Additionally, the innovation hub will not only create employment opportunities but will also drive innovation and sustainable development across the communities in Plateau.
Giving her remarks, Ms. Elsie G Attafuah, UNDP Nigeria Resident Representative stated that, “This Makerspace is a game-changer. This is not just a building – it is a launchpad for ideas, a factory for innovation, and a catalyst for prosperity. The Jos Agro-Innovation Makerspace will give entrepreneurs, inventors, and artisans the tools to turn ideas into prototypes, prototypes into businesses, and businesses into industries.” Ms. Attafuah further added that the Makerspace will redefine how agriculture is practiced in Plateau State – from drone-powered precision farming to agro-processing that adds value to raw produce. “Plateau’s youth will now have the opportunity to lead in Agro-Tech, Green Economy, and Digital Innovation, positioning the state as a national leader in smart agriculture and manufacturing.”
The Makerspace will not only generate employment but will also cultivate job creators and entrepreneurs. By bridging the gap between education and employability, it will enhance the quality of life for communities in Plateau State. The space will also equip young entrepreneurs with essential tools and resources to transform ideas into tangible prototypes, streamlining the process of product testing and refinement. Additionally, it will foster a collaborative environment by connecting entrepreneurs, innovators, and industry experts, encouraging knowledge sharing, partnerships, and investment opportunities. By lowering financial barriers to innovation, the Makerspace will enable entrepreneurs to experiment without significant sunk costs while providing hands-on training. This approach will help them acquire new skills and stay updated with emerging technologies.
