Addis Ababa, 2 April 2025 – The Government of Japan is reinforcing its partnership with UNDP in line with its commitment to Ethiopia’s peace and recovery efforts.
Japan has been a key partner in UNDP’s multi-partner Peace Support Facility, providing approximately $3M to assist local authorities in Afar, Amhara, and Tigray to rebuild after the northern Ethiopia conflict.

Ambassador SHIBATA Hironori emphasized Japan’s commitment to sustainable peace, stating, “The Government of Japan has provided the support for the Peace Support Facility since this program focuses on quick recovery of all local communities and people’s lives to their pre-conflict state. I would appreciate the regional government officials, with the support of UNDP, are taking their strong initiative and making every effort to reconstruct peoples’ lives.”
The peace support activities supported through Japan funding include restoring governance structures, including rehabilitating 190 government and justice offices, 64 schools, 22 healthcare facilities and 127 water schemes. Interventions have also helped to revitalise livelihoods, particularly for women, youth, people living with disabilities and internally displaced persons returning home.

Mr. Samuel Doe, UNDP Ethiopia Resident Representative, highlighted the significance of Japan’s support, stating, “The Government of Japan’s contributions to the Peace Support Facility have been invaluable in advancing peacebuilding and recovery efforts in Ethiopia. These resources are directly impacting the lives of millions, enabling communities to rebuild and move forward.”
Japan has purchased 12 motorbikes and three cars to strengthen the operational capacity of regional Recovery and Reconstruction Offices (RROs), local police forces, and Woreda administrations.
The official handover of the motorbikes took place in Addis Ababa in the presence of Dr. Tilahun Mehari, Head of the Amhara Bureau of Finance, and Mr. Nuredin Mohammed, Head of the Afar Recovery and Reconstruction Office.
Japan’s ongoing partnership with UNDP around DDR, National Dialogue and peace support underscores its dedication to promoting peace, stability, and inclusive development in Ethiopia.
