Haiti: One year later

UNDP has worked to achieve two key objectives in Haiti in the 12 months since the devastating earthquake of 12 January, 2010. The first has been to support the government in its mission to provide services to its citizens, particularly those who have been most affected by the earthquake. The second has been to work with the local communities in Haiti to help the country recover and build back stronger.

Highlights

  • Nearly 3.5 million people were impacted by the earthquake of January 12, 2010.
  • Close to 2.3 million people were displaced from their homes, including 302,000 children.
  • 188,383 houses collapsed or were badly damaged, and 105 000 were completely destroyed.
  • The total value of damage and losses caused by the earthquake is estimated at US$8.7 billion, equivalent to more than 120 percent of Haiti's 2009 Gross Domestic Product.
