UNDP in Kosovo has been active in Small Arms Light Weapons (SALW) Control since 2008 through various projects. The support was initiated through the Kosovo Small Arms Control Initiative (KOSSAC) that was initially designed to reduce armed violence in Kosovo and increase community safety. It evolved throughout the years into a comprehensive armed-violence prevention project with a strong focus on security sector reform and capacity development. The contribution to the security sector continued with Firearms and Explosives Risk Minimization project (FERM) that succeeded in supporting the Kosovo stakeholders in controlling the widespread illegal possession and circulation of small arms and light weapons, and through a risk-based management and evidence-based approach, to minimize the risks of these weapons and explosive materials. Most recently, we are implementing the Kosovo Safety & Security Project (KSSP) which uses a holistic security approach aiming to support the development of the relevant legal framework, strategies, and action plans, to increase public safety for all inhabitants by finding local solutions for local problems while also supporting central level institutions.
