Papua New Guinea’s Internal Revenue Commission (IRC), in partnership with the Australian Tax Office (ATO), has launched a new programme under the Tax Inspectors Without Borders (TIWB) initiative. TIWB is a joint initiative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The launch ceremony earlier this month at the IRC Headquarters in Port Moresby marked a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen its tax audit capabilities and combat tax abuse.
‘’The IRC is committed to building on the success of its first TIWB programme, to continue strengthening domestic capacity for fair and effective tax governance and combating illicit financial flows,’’ said Sam Koim, the Commissioner-General of the Internal Revenue Commission of Papua New Guinea.

‘’I am glad that our partner in this initiative is the Australian Tax Office, which is among the strongest tax administrations in OECD member countries and remains a longstanding development partner of Papua New Guinea. This is a great example of partnership in action. The practical, hands-on, “learning by doing” approach used by the TIWB initiative facilitates not just knowledge transfer, but knowledge adaptation and co-creation,’’ said Aadil Mansoor, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative.

With a focus on boosting sustainable tax revenues, TIWB has facilitated technical assistance and capacity building across revenue administrations in developing economies. The initiative brings global tax expertise to strengthen tax administrations in developing countries, fostering fair revenue systems for sustainable growth.
