Starting on the 23rd November 2019, the Autonomous Region of Bougainville will have a referendum to inform its future political status – with the options on the ballot being ‘Greater Autonomy’ or ‘Independence’.
Earlier this year the two governments (Government of Papua New Guinea and Autonomous Bougainville Government/ABG) requested UNDP’s support to develop national awareness materials to explain to all citizens the background to the Bougainville referendum (which is one of the three ‘pillars’ of Bougainville Peace Agreement signed in 2001), the options available to Bougainville and the steps following the referendum. Following this request, with support from the Peace-building Fund, and in partnership with Emtek and the two governments, UNDP/UN is proud to share this four minute television advert with you.
