UNDP participated in the 56th Session of the United Nations Statistics Commission, represented by the Human Development Report Office (HDRO) and the Governance Data & Analytics team from the Global Policy Centre for Governance (GPCG). The annual gathering represents the highest decision-making body for international statistical activities, bringing together chief statisticians and experts from member states to set statistical standards and develop concepts and methods for national and international implementation. The theme for the 2025 Session was "Better Data, Better Lives," emphasizing the critical role of quality data in improving global living conditions.

The UNDP remains engaged in the discussion and is working to overcome today’s data challenges to support country implementation and monitoring of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. By leveraging diverse data sources and methods, and building robust statistics ecosystems, we can help ensure that no one is left behind in pursuing the SDGs.

The GPCG co-organised two side events as part of the Commission session.

Side event on discrimination statistics

Together with the Praia City Group on Governance Statistics, the GPCG hosted a high-level virtual side event on the measurement of Non-Discrimination and Equality(link is external). The event featured the Director-General of Eurostat, the OECD and several directors general of national statistics offices, including Norway and Belize. It took stock of the progress accomplished so far in producing statistics on discrimination and inequalities and discussed ongoing regional (by Eurostat) and international (by the Praia Group(link is external)) initiatives aimed at harmonizing measurement methodologies in this area.

The event also highlighted co-creation solutions that national statistical offices can undertake not only with governments, but also with civil society and community-based organizations already collecting data from groups at risk of discrimination.

The 2nd side event was in-person and co-organized with the United Nations Statistics Division’s (UNSD) Collaborative on Citizen Data(link is external) and the Ghana Statistical Service(link is external). The event highlighted the importance of integrating diverse data sources to assess service delivery across sectors (education, health, water, sanitation, etc.) in the context of SDG monitoring. The experience of the Ghana Statistical Service and the GPCG collaboration in using citizen data for monitoring satisfaction with public services was showcased.

The 56th Session discussed two key milestones in integrating citizen data:
- Endorsing the Copenhagen Framework on Citizen Data.
- Including citizen data as a standing agenda item.
