Mapping Mining to the SDGs: An Atlas
Mapping Mining to the SDGs: An Atlas
November 8, 2016
This report, prepared jointly by the United Nations Development Programme, the World Economic Forum, the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investments and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network, illustrates how mining can contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The aim of the report is to guide the mining industry to:
- Map its roles, responsibilities and opportunities across the 17 Sustainable Development Goals;
- Demonstrate how the mining industry can ensure that social and economic benefits of mining are widely shared and environmental impact minimized;
- Map the relationship between mining industry and the SDGs by using examples of good practice in the industry and existing knowledge and resources in sustainable development.
While the main target audience of the report is the mining industry, it is also intended to be useful for other stakeholders in this sector, including national and local governments, communities, development organizations, academia and others who have an interest in ensuring that the sustainable development outcomes from the mining sector are optimized. The hope is that the Atlas will spur action that will leverage the transformative power of collaboration and partnership between the mining industry and other stakeholders.
