UNDP utilizes a human rights-based approach to our development cooperation and programming to expand human rights and the human development approach.
UNDP’s human development approach is about creating the environment for people to live the lives they value including by expanding capabilities and freedom to seize opportunities and make choices. The realization of human rights is critical to the achievement of human development.
UNDP utilizes a human rights-based approach to our development cooperation as enshrined in our Social and Environmental Standards and the UN Common Understanding on the Human Rights-Based Approach to Development Cooperation.
The HRBA outlines that the plans, policies and processes of development are anchored in a system of rights and corresponding obligations established by international law, including all civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights and the right to development. HRBA requires human rights principles of universality, indivisibility, equality and non-discrimination, participation and accountability inform the process of development, and a focus on the capacities of both ‘duty-bearers’ to meet their obligations, and ‘rights-holders’ to claim their rights.
UNDP also implements the UN Human Rights Due Diligence Policy on UN support to non-UN security forces.
