UNDP South Sudan Resident Representative Dr. Mohamed Abchir Makes Courtesy Visit to First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny

JUBA, South Sudan, 14 August 2024 – In a significant first step to establish collaborative efforts for governance and development, Dr. Mohamed Abchir, the new Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in South Sudan, made a courtesy visit to the First Vice President and Chairperson of the Governance Cluster, Dr. Riek Machar Teny.
The meeting was pivotal in reaffirming UNDP’s commitment to fostering inclusive, effective, and accountable governance in South Sudan. Recognizing governance as one of UNDP’s signature solutions globally, Dr. Abchir emphasized the organization’s intention to adopt a people-centered, systemic approach to bolster sustainable development.
“Effective governance is not just a UNDP signature solution; it serves as the foundation for our three key areas of change: structural transformation, leaving no one behind, and building resilience. It is essential in managing the risks associated with these transformations and ensuring that we empower and include all citizens,” Dr. Abchir stated.
On current affairs, the two principals deliberated on areas of ongoing collaboration with the government of South Sudan including: support to the electoral process through the National Elections Commission (NEC), the Constitution Making Process as well as support extended to the Judicial Reform Committee (JRC).
In addition, Dr. Abchir reaffirmed UNDP’s dedication to supporting South Sudan in achieving sustainable peace and development. He also committed to enhancing the existing partnerships and relationships between UNDP and the Government of the Republic of South Sudan to tackle ongoing challenges together.
As he embarks on this new chapter in South Sudan, Dr. Abchir's enthusiasm for promoting development and partnerships underlines the significant role that UNDP will play in shaping a better future for the people of South Sudan. The UNDP team looks forward to working together with the Government and people of South Sudan to drive transformative change in the country as well as the region.
