Integrated Water Management Project
Sri Lanka is among the top 10 countries most affected by climate change. Severe shifts in seasonal rainfall patterns have increased floods and droughts over the years. As a result, crop yields have declined, food insecurity has increased, village irrigation systems have been damaged and chronic illnesses such as kidney disease have been linked to poor water quality with high rates of morbidity and mortality.
The 'Climate Resilient Integrated Water Management' project contributes to resuscitating ancient irrigation systems in three river basins (Malwathu Oya, Mi Oya, and Yan Oya) for effective water management and safe drinking water.
This is the first time in Sri Lanka that a nationwide integrated water management platform is being advanced.
The project sets a precedent for future river basin management planning and brings together a diverse range of actors.
The Government of Sri Lanka under the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment, is implementing the project with technical support from the United Nations Development Programme.
