March 5, 2018

UNDP Turkey reflects the stories of five powerful women from five different places of Turkey to draw attention to the Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality on International Women’s Day 8 March.

The United Nations Development Programme, in its “5 out of Five” campaign for the International Women’s Day, tells the stories of five women including two Syrians who have overcome challenges to become socially and economically empowered in various provinces of Turkey with short videos.

Having entered into force in January 2016 to eradicate poverty, protect our planet and build peaceful and prosperous lives for all human beings, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or Global Goals(link is external) are planned to be achieved by 2030. The SDG 5 focuses on all forms of gender-based discrimination, including empowerment of women in economic, political and social spheres.

In Turkey, two out of every three women do not participate in the labour force while more than 70 percent of men do. It is estimated that once women participate in the labour force at rates as men, the contribution to the global product will be approximately 28 trillion dollars annually. Experts state that if women and men equally participate in the economy in Turkey, the per capita national income will be 30 percent higher.
