From July 31 to August 2, 2024, UNDP in cooperation with the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan held a series of roundtable discussions and public speaking workshops for regional women leaders, reserve women leaders, representatives of “women’s wing” of political parties, local councils, youth and mass media in Jizzakh, Samarkand, and Bukhara.

Speaking at the opening of regional roundtable discussions, local senators spoke in detail about the elections to the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis and local councils this year. The participants discussed the importance of increasing the 30% quota for women candidates accepted in the electoral system to 40%, as well as the steps, obstacles and opportunities to achieve them. Participants exchanged ideas about the implementation of the gender equality policy in our country, as stated in the Gender Equality Strategy in the Republic of Uzbekistan until 2030, “Ensuring equal rights and opportunities for women and men in the exercise of electoral rights” and achieving the target indicators.

Anvarjon Meliboyev, National Public Information Officer of the United Nations Office in Uzbekistan, led a master class on the art of public speaking. He stressed that effective communication skills are essential for building public trust, credibility in democratic processes, as well as for shaping the reputation of a knowledgeable and reliable leader.

Ibragimova Musavvar, the active member of the women’s wing in Samarkand regional council of “Adolat” social democratic party said, “The workshop raised topical subjects, particularly, what I found interesting is ways to find solutions to complicated situations, as well as the realization that common problems faced by women are not only women's problem, but the problem of the society. I think every participant got some takeaways for their future work on the ground”.

Participants left the discussions feeling confident that the skills and knowledge gained during these sessions would help them play a more active role in the upcoming elections and in their ongoing efforts to advance gender equality in Uzbekistan.

These workshops and roundtables are organized as part of the project of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) “Achieving Equality by Supporting the Implementation of the National Gender Strategy of Uzbekistan”.
