Paving the Way for Sustainable Development Financing in Albania.

A roundtable on innovative financing for sustainable development in Albania gathered key government figures including the Minister of Finance, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Bank of Albania, CEOs of leading banks, representatives of the private sector and international development partners as well as UNDP Sustainable Finance Hub and Istanbul Center for Private Sector Development.

Globally, UNDP is focused on enhancing financing for sustainable development, fostering an economic governance framework that enables governments, development agencies, and the private sector to prioritize SDG investments. Thanks to UNDP's support, Albania has made significant strides in monitoring SDG-related spending and developing holistic financing approaches. UNDP has been at the forefront, initiating the preparation of the country's first INFF, starting with the Development Finance Assessment (DFA). The DFA provides a comprehensive view of financial flows and identifies critical opportunities for resource alignment and mobilization.

One standout finding of the Albania DFA was that public spending alone will not suffice to finance all national development priorities, making the mobilization of domestic private finance essential. In addition, UNDP supported the creation of Albania's first SDG Investor Map —a pioneering market intelligence tool designed to guide private sector investment towards sustainable development.

The event offered an opportunity to present UNDP’s work in this area and reflect on how they can guide future actions by:

1. Identifying innovative tools and instruments for leveraging additional financial resources.
2. Highlighting sectors with the most potential for impactful investment.
3. Consolidating these insights into an Integrated National Financing Framework (INFF) Financing Strategy.

Insights and discussions from the roundtable will be instrumental in identifying and mobilizing the additional resources needed to meet Albania's development priorities and the progress towards Sustainable Development Goals.
