Assessment of Hydro-Ecological and Socio-Economic Systems of the Vjosa River
Assessment of Hydro-Ecological and Socio-Economic Systems of the Vjosa River
May 14, 2020
The ‘Assessment of hydro-ecological and socio-economic systems of Vjosa River Basin Area’ was performed as sub-task under the European Union (EU) Flood Protection Infrastructure Project (FPIP) for the Vjosa River Basin (VRB), implemented by UNDP 2016-2017.The assessment considered the modeling of the broader water management challenges in terms of availability and allocation for the entire Vjosa River Basin. The main result was the development of an integrated hydrological and water management model (the Water Evaluation And Planning -WEAP), which consists of a set of climate change and developments’ scenarios, that identify the expected climate change impacts between the years 2015-2050, related particularly to water, agriculture, energy and tourism sectors.Understanding specific vulnerabilities allows planners to propose and prioritize potential measures to adapt the climate change impacts within the Vjosa River Basin area. The development of the WEAP application for the VRB, was executed by the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) in close collaboration with staff from the Institute of Geosciences, Energy, Water and Environment (IGEWE) of the Polytechnic University of Tirana, included capacity building activities to strengthen institutional capacity for model construction and application.
