Underwater Naval History and Cultural Heritage in Vlora Bay

April 28, 2023

The underwater cultural heritage of Karaburun Sazan MPA and Vlora Bay is an important part of Albania's underwater heritage, and there is a growing interest in exploring these sites through recreational diving. Albania's maritime area is particularly rich in underwater cultural heritage, with Vlora Bay being one of the most significant areas for shipwrecks.

This publication aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the shipwrecks in Vlora Bay by exploring their naval and underwater history and taking into account various factors such as geography, demographics, economics, and environmental protection.

The publication was prepared as part of the UNDP project "Improvement of coverage and management effectiveness of Marine and Coastal Protected Areas in Albania - Phase II," which is funded by the Italian Agency for Cooperation and Development and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme and the Ministry of Tourism and Environment through the National Agency of Protected Areas.

However, it is crucial to properly regulate diving activities to protect the shipwrecks. Divers who wish to explore these sites for tourism and recreation must obtain all necessary permits and take precautions to ensure their preservation.
