Latin America and the Caribbean
Our focus
UNDP’s work in the LAC region is tailored to answer specific country needs through an integrated approach that leverages the whole UNDP architecture built over decades of working on development. In collaboration with partners, UNDP supports countries in the region to accelerate their energy transitions through three main areas:
- Helping countries develop policies that enable sustainable energy investments: Providing policy support for creating the right enabling environments for renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable transport investment. UNDP will leverage its transdisciplinary expertise to systemically address barriers and challenges to ensure the transition is just, policy coherence and that the fiscal risks are responsibly managed.
- Building sustainable, inclusive and efficient cities: Delivering technical and programmatic support for compact, integrated urban planning. Supporting partnerships for participatory and inclusive governance with multistakeholder engagement. Promoting innovative approaches for energy and resource efficiency for urban climate action such as net zero pathways, circular urban economy, and low and zero emission mobility.
- Supporting the region's Small Island Development States to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels: Supporting Caribbean countries to strengthen their resilience to variability of fossil fuels prices and extreme weather events with diversification of energy sources. Promoting renewable energy solutions and new business models to reduce fossil fuel dependency. Assessing energy infrastructure resilience including storage solutions.
