February 27, 2025

This book documents the six-year journey of the KfW funded UNDP-PETRA Project, from its inception in response to the 2018 disasters in West Nusa Tenggara and Central Sulawesi to its impactful contributions in rebuilding critical infrastructure and revitalizing livelihoods. It highlights PETRA’s data-driven and inclusive approach, including technical support for post-disaster needs assessments and the implementation of resilient, gender- and disability-inclusive designs. The project’s achievements—such as the reconstruction of 14 health facilities and 25 schools, improved waste management in two cities, and the revitalization of agriculture and local economies that helps the recovery of more than 500.000 people in two provinces—demonstrate how sustainable recovery can be achieved through strategic planning and collaboration.

By combining text, data, graphics, and photos, this book provides an engaging and comprehensive look at PETRA’s successes, challenges, and key lessons learned. It serves as a valuable resource for policymakers, development practitioners, and disaster recovery experts, offering insights into effective post-disaster reconstruction strategies. The experiences captured in this book aim to inform and inspire future recovery initiatives in Indonesia and beyond, ensuring more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable rebuilding efforts.
