Stronger together: Town Hall meeting promotes community acceptance for reintegration in Qaim
May 26, 2022
Raising awareness is important for reducing disinformation surrounding reintegration in areas of Iraq where displaced families are returning. UNDP Iraq’s Community-based Reconciliation and Reintegration Project, funded by the Government of Japan, is currently underway to support reintegration of 4,000 families in four areas of Anbar, Ninewa and Salah al-Din governorates with a comprehensive package of livelihood support, housing rehabilitation, and Mental Health and Psychosocial Support for previously displaced returnees and community members.
Following a the first in a series of Town Hall meetings in Habbaniyah, a second meeting was held in Qaim, Anbar on 11 May 2022 for over 65 attendees, to raise awareness among the community and encourage reconciliation and acceptance among returning internally displaced families and the community of return. Town Hall meetings are also vital to ensuring information is shared regarding the projects occurring in the four areas, to reduce any stigma surrounding the return of families, and to provide clarity that the projects will not only benefit the returnees, but also existing community members.
“We have no reservation about the return of these families who are affiliated with ISIL, because the women and children are not responsible for the acts committed by their husbands and fathers. We encourage these families to return to their places of origin and to reintegrate with society. They are most welcome back.”
-Ahmed Jidain Khalif, Mayor, Qaim District.
“The Local Peace Committee has a very active role in the community, and we need to train more leaders in Qaim. Both community members and the ISIL-affiliated families need training and job opportunities and mental health support.”
-Afaf Abed Abdullah, Director of a local school and accelerated learning center.
“UNDP and the Government of Japan have done a great deal to assist us with reintegration. Raising awareness on the project, as we are doing today, is important to ensure that everyone is aware of the support and time we are taking to reintegrate families properly, including their social rehabilitation.”
-Amer Tayeb Saeed, Local Peace Committee member, Qaim District.
UNDP Iraq has launched in 2020 a dedicated five-year Social Cohesion Programme to promote stronger, peaceful, and more cohesive communities in all areas of Iraq.
