Social protection is central to achieving sustainable development goals, particularly in regions like Latin America and the Caribbean, where economic shocks, climate events, and social inequalities create substantial vulnerabilities. UNDP’s service offer integrates policies and programs designed to prevent and mitigate these risks, aligning with the broader UNDP mandate of fostering inclusive growth and resilience. On average, developing countries, including those in Latin America and the Caribbean, allocate an average of 1.5% of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to social safety nets and UNDP LAC is contributing to this efforts in 18 countries in the region.  To strengthen social protection systems, Luxembourg too has contributed 13 million euros to the Poverty and Inequality Funding Window, financing projects across the region and globally.

The recent social and economic challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic have highlighted the critical need for adaptive and inclusive social protection systems. By launching this service offer, UNDP seeks to support governments in developing robust frameworks to address both immediate social risks and long-term demographic and climate-related challenges.

The event aims to present and promote UNDP’s comprehensive social protection services offer for the Latin America and Caribbean region, and to highlight the collaborative efforts between Luxembourg and UNDP on social protection in the region through the Poverty and Inequality Funding Window financed by the Government of Luxembourg. In this event we will present how the offer and the collaborative efforts with Luxemburg aim to strengthen social protection systems to reduce poverty, inequality, and vulnerability, contributing to sustainable development. This event will foster dialogue on innovative social protection approaches and policy coherence and promote partnerships with governments and multilateral agencies.
