Makassar City is relying on innovation to improve its urban infrastructures and public services across the city. In November 2016, UNDP in collaboration with the mayor’s office, the city’s transportation agency, UN Pulse Lab Jakarta, and BaKTI organized an innovation workshop to develop solutions in mitigating the city’s growing traffic congestion. The workshop focused on improving the current public transportation system that is heavily dependent on informal transport, as well as improving traffic operations including the supply of traffic information. This report presents some background information on the city’s transport challenges; it highlights UNDP’s support, the workshop’s methodology and results, and the way forward for UNDP and partners in 2017.
