Ethiopian International Peace Support Training Institute
Background
Ethiopia is one of the top troop contributing countries to the United Nations (UN) and AU peacekeeping mission, with more than 12,000 peacekeepers on the ground. Ethiopia is the first in African peacekeeping operations and it’s also one of the leading countries deploying the highest number of women in peace operation.
The peace support capacity building project seeks to enhance the technical skills and knowledge of local and international peacekeeping practitioners, thereby contribute towards successful peace support operations of Africa and the UN.
The International Peace Support Training Institute aims to become a regional and international center of excellence in training and deploying civilian practitioners in peacekeeping operations of the African Union and the United Nations.
The project :
UNDP, with the support of the government of Japan, supports the establishment and strengthening of the EIPKTC and provides capacity development to the Center to become a regional and international center of excellence in peacekeeping, peace building and conflict resolution, with a special niche in organizing integrated training programmes that enable Ethiopia and other states to deploy able military and civilian practitioners in peacekeeping operations.
- Enhanced institutional capacity for applied research, conflict analysis, training design, that address regional Peace Support Operations (PSO) needs as well as peace and security policy development at regional level;
- Improved regional, multi-national and multi-dimensional PSO capability of civilian personnel to address the evolving peace and security situations;
- Increased capacity of regional police deployed in PSO in Eastern Africa or wider Africa;
- Enhanced regional standby capacity of civilian experts for peacekeeping missions and peace building elements of the East African Security Forces;
Update
The Government of Japan through the Japan-UNDP partnership funding has so far provided USD 3,769,000 to the Peace Support Training Institute. Since 2014, the training institute has conducted 26 local and international level courses for 681peacekeeping practitioners (580 from Ethiopia and 101 from other countries). 113 of the trainees were female.
UNDP is providing technical and capacity building support to the Ethiopian International Peacekeeping Training Centre towards becoming a regional and international center of excellence in training and deploying civilian practitioners in peacekeeping operations of the African Union and the United Nations

Total Budget: $ 3,769,000. Please note the Government of Japan is the only development partner of the project. The funding was highlighted in the attached factsheet.
