Achieving Low Carbon Growth in the City Through Electrified Urban Transport System in Thailand
December 11, 2023
The project is a collaboration among the UNDP Thailand, Chulalongkorn University, and Nakhon Ratchasima Municipality. Funded and overseen by the United Kingdom Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transition (UK PACT) – the Green Recovery Challenge Fund, the project aims to build the capacity of Nakhon Ratchasima in analyzing urban mobility and support the policymakers to make the best-informed decision to transform their urban mobility.
This policy recommendation covers the dimensions of transportation engineering, environmental impact, economic and legal analysis, and Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI), through several relevant internationally recognized tools.
The implementation of electrified public transport supports the municipality towards low-carbon city development. It will help reduce the carbon footprints of the municipality through the shift from the use of fossil fuels towards an electrified transportation system. Based on calculation, in 2027 and 2042, greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 11,879 and 43,526 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, respectively, which equals 7.05% and 13.21%, greenhouse gas reduction from the transportation activity of the Nakhon Ratchasima Municipality or 2.76% and 7.32% greenhouse gas reduction of all activities of the City Municipality, respectively.
