UNDP and Ministry of Planning Discuss Human Development Report Findings in Iraq

May 30, 2024

The Ministry of Planning in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), hosted an event in Baghdad to discuss the findings of the latest Human Development Report. The event saw the presence of key dignitaries, including the Deputy Minister of Planning, prominent academic experts, and representatives from civil society organizations (CSOs).

The gathering aimed to foster a comprehensive dialogue on Iraq's human development trajectory, examining both achievements and areas requiring attention. The Human Development Report, a flagship publication by UNDP, provides an in-depth analysis of various socio-economic indicators, offering insights into health, education, income, and overall quality of life.

Key Takeaways from the Event:

  1. The Deputy Minister of Planning emphasized the government's commitment to improving human development indices. He highlighted ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, while also acknowledging the challenges posed by political instability and economic fluctuations.
  2. Representatives from UNDP presented the main findings of the report, noting improvements in literacy rates and life expectancy. However, they pointed out the need for accelerated efforts in reducing poverty and unemployment, particularly among youth and marginalized communities.
  3. Academic experts provided an analysis of the data, suggesting strategic approaches to address the identified gaps. They underscored the importance of sustainable development practices and the integration of innovative technologies to boost economic growth and social welfare.
  4. Representatives from civil society organizations shared grassroots perspectives, highlighting the ground realities faced by local communities. Their contributions stressed the need for inclusive policies that cater to the diverse needs of Iraq's population, ensuring that no one is left behind.

The report estimates that the global Human Development Index average reached a record level in 2023. However, the story is hidden in the average.

After two decades of steady decline, inequality is rising again. While the richer countries have attained record values in human development index, and pulled the global average up, the poorest countries have been falling behind.

On the other hand, Iraq's National Human Development Report (NHDR ) focuses on social contract and citizenship and addressing the country's socio-economic challenges by promoting inclusive growth, improving education and healthcare, and fostering sustainable development. It highlights the need for governance reforms, economic diversification, and enhanced social protection systems. The report aims to build a more equitable and resilient society for all Iraqis.

The event underscored the critical role of multi-stakeholder collaboration in driving human development. By bringing together government officials, experts, and community representatives, it set the stage for informed policymaking and strategic planning.

The UNDP and the Ministry of Planning reaffirmed their commitment to working closely with all stakeholders to translate the insights from the Human Development Report into tangible actions. This collaborative approach is expected to pave the way for a more prosperous and equitable future for all Iraqis.
