Windrose Technology Supports UNDP Research with Universities on Zero Emission Trucks (ZETs)

Istanbul, Türkiye [July 10th 2024] The urgent need to transition towards sustainable transportation solutions, particularly in the trucking sector and zero emissions logistic, Istanbul International Center for Private Sector in Development (ICPSD) and the Sustainable Energy Hub has partnered with Windrose Technology, a developer of zero-emissions heavy and long-haul trucks, attaining net zero carbon emissions moonshot by 2050.

Recognizing its impact, sustainable transport is vital in tackling climate change as the transportation sector contributes 20.2% of global CO2 emissions, with road transport accounting for 75% of these emissions. Decarbonizing the transport sector requires a coordinated effort with the energy and industrial sectors to transition to renewable fuels and alternative vehicle technologies. Integrating renewable energy technologies is crucial for enhancing climate ambitions. Also increased funding for research and development can empower the transport sector to implement effective solutions, driving forward the global agenda for zero-emission mobility and contributing to the broader goals of the UNDP Moonshots.

Zero-emission trucks can be considered one of the important opportunities to provide innovative solutions to reduce emissions, enhance air quality, and decrease operational expenses in the logistics sector. In that context, the ZET deployment aligns directly with long-term low greenhouse gas emission development strategies (LT-LEDS) while supporting the long-term horizon to the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

Green ports are essential for reducing the environmental impact of maritime operations, as they focus on implementing zero-emission logistics and enhancing energy efficiency to minimize pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions. The transition to zero-emission logistics within green ports not only improves air quality and reduces carbon footprints but also sets a benchmark for sustainability in global supply chains, aligning with international climate goals.

The objectives of the report are:

  • Highlighting the challenges, interventions and policy recommendations to support the transition to green ports, focusing on regulatory frameworks that encourage sustainable logistics practices.

  • Raise awareness on Zero-Emission Trucks (ZETs), highlighting their reliability, capabilities, and the innovative technologies driving their advancement specifically within green ports by looking at best practices.

  • Emphasize zero-emissions truck production's economic and environmental benefits for achieving Net Zero emissions. 

  • Highlight the importance of public and private sector investment for ZET ecosystem, with an emphasize on the ports and ultimately contributing to the transition towards sustainable transportation and implementation of zero-emission logistics solutions in ports.
