Recovery Process and Disaster Resilience of Women Led Micro-Enterprises in Kahramanmaraş Report

March 3, 2025

This study aims to contribute to the recovery processes of micro and small enterprises (MSMEs) owned by women by examining in-depth the challenges these businesses faced following the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 2023.
The primary aim of this study is to reveal the direct and indirect effects of the 2023 earthquakes on women entrepreneurs, considering the economic, social, and psychological impacts created by the earthquakes. With this study, considering the role of women entrepreneurship in economic development, it is aimed to identify the financial, operational, and organizational barriers faced by businesses after the disaster and to develop sustainable solutions to overcome these barriers.
The study focused exclusively on Kahramanmaraş, one of the provinces most affected by the destructive impact of the earthquake and where the earthquake's epicenter was located. Kahramanmaraş was chosen because it is the province where the UNDP pilot study was initiated in strong collaboration with stakeholders, making it a place where access for operators can be facilitated with fewer restrictions. While the research findings are specific to Kahramanmaraş, the recommendations for disaster-resistant structures can be evaluated on a national scale.
