14 charging stations for electric vehicles will be soon installed on the main urban routes in the Republic of Moldova. The procurement will be made thanks to a partnership between the Energy Efficiency Fund and the United Nations Development Programme. Both institutions signed today a financing agreement.
The total amount of the project is 4 million lei, out of which 2 million lei are provided by the Energy Efficiency Fund. UNDP Moldova, will invest the same amount, including as co-financing of the private sector. The activity will be managed by the “Moldova Sustainable Green Cities” Project, implemented by UNDP Moldova and financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
“We intend to create the first public network of charging stations for electric vehicles in Republic of Moldova. The network will provide electrical mobility in major cities in the country, as well as the electric corridor between Romania and Ukraine, having an environmental impact. We are glad to be at the basis of the ecological transport network development in our country,” mentioned Sergiu Corin, director of the Energy Efficiency Fund.
The project is expected to be finalized in the spring of 2019. Initially, a feasibility study will be developed to identify the locations of the charging stations – a process that will be carried out in close consultation with the private sector and national and local public authorities. Also, an attractive financial mechanism for purchasing and managing the charging stations of electric vehicles will be identified and applied, and a billing system will be developed. Moreover, the legal framework will be adjusted to align it with the EU standards, as well as to stimulate the use of electric vehicles in Moldova.
“By developing the charging infrastructure of electric vehicles in Moldova, we aim to increase the number of cars with low pollutant emissions. The experience from other countries demonstrates that the development of the electric vehicles charging infrastructure is a key factor in increasing the number of electric vehicles," mentioned Alexandru Rotaru, the project manager of “Moldova Sustainable Green Cities” Project.
Currently, in the Republic of Moldova there are registered 54 totally electric vehicles and 5 charging stations, all of them being in Chisinau. In total, in 2017 there were 938,058 vehicles in the country, the vast majority being older than 11 years. 14% of the total greenhouse gas emissions are from the transport sector.
In many countries the share of electric vehicles already exceeds 1% of the total amount of vehicles. For Moldova, a 1% share would mean 10,000 electric vehicles.
