Baseline Study of Current Scenario of Plastic Waste Management in Rahim Yar Khan
December 12, 2022
Solid Waste Management (SWM) has been a long-lasting issue for both rural and urban settings in Pakistan mainly due to unsustainable waste management practices which leads to health-related diseases. In Pakistan solid waste is generated 0.283 to 0.612 kg/capita/day and the plastic waste accounts for the 2nd highest proportion of MSW which makes it 6.41 million tons of waste plastic annually. Unfortunately, Pakistan does not have a robust recycling procedure which could cater to the amount of plastic waste produced. To address this problem UNDP, in collaboration with Unilever-Pakistan has initiated a project named “Baseline Assessment of Current Scenario of Plastic Waste Management for Rahim Yar Khan (RYK) City” which follows the circular economy model. This project aims to conduct a study to identify the gaps and ways to improve the plastic waste management system and to identify the approaches for shifting towards circular economy for plastics – to make RYK a Zero Plastic Waste City.
