The new inventory of 13,032 glaciers in Pakistan

November 7, 2024

“Glaciers and Students” is a multi-faceted development project to steer the Italian commitment towards Pakistan’s magnificent natural heritage. It is well-aligned with the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation’s strategy in Pakistan under the framework of Agenda 2030, supporting Sustainable Development Goal 13.1 that aims at enhancing local capacity to cope with the onset of climate change and natural disasters. Moreover, it harmoniously complements with other development projects funded by the Italian Government to protect Pakistan’s biodiversity and to support isolated communities of Northern Areas in water management for agricultural purposes.

After the catastrophic floods in 2010 and 2022 and the recurrent changes in Pakistan’s glaciers, it is widely acknowledged that this “third pole” represents a primary national water resource, that must be managed and safeguarded, but should also be seen as a threat for the population and infrastructures. Thus, we are honored to partner in this new phase of global efforts in pursuit of monitoring and safeguarding Pakistan’s glacial resources. We believe that not only will a wide range of stakeholders, including researchers and environmental specialists, find this inventory catalog quite useful in several ways, but also the key decision-makers at all levels. The inventory clearly shows that you cannot ignore the importance of thorough data collection and latest methodologies that are grounded in solid scientific background and field research activities.
