Our Strategic Plan 2022-2025 introduces the evolution of #NextGenUNDP into #FutureSmartUNDP. More than a mantra, it is our new benchmark for success in the future of development. Building on UNDP’s 50 years of expertise across 170 countries, this new approach allows us to focus and prioritize where country demands are greatest. By working together in this way, we aim to expand people’s choices for a fairer, sustainable future, with people and planet in balance.

Inclusive Governance

UNDP Sri Lanka’s Flagship Portfolio on SDG16- Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions brings together inclusive governance and peacebuilding work under one roof. As part of the UNDP Country Programme and the United Nations Sustainable Development Framework, the Portfolio improves the effectiveness, responsiveness, and accountability of key institutions to deliver people-centred services; promoting inclusive, and participatory decision-making processes; and strengthening peace and reconciliation.

Climate and Environment

As one of the 36 biodiversity hotspots, Sri Lanka is highly vulnerable to climate change, habitat fragmentation and over-exploitation. Shifts in seasonal rainfall patterns have resulted in increased floods and droughts in the last decade directly impacting rural livelihoods and health with chronic kidney diseases on the rise. UNDP is working towards a sustainable Sri Lanka by building capacities to respond to the effects of climate change by exploring renewable energy and energy-efficient solutions while supporting reform and modernization of environmental management systems.

Youth and Innovation

Today’s generation of young people is the largest the world has ever known. In Sri Lanka, the youth make up nearly a quarter of the population. Addressing youth needs, and recognizing their role as critical agents of change, is a top priority for the United Nations.

Gender Equality

Gender equality is central to our work. UNDP believes that gender inequalities and discriminatory attitudes and practices that hold women back must be confronted and eliminated if we are to leave no one behind. 

In Sri Lanka, UNDP supports the Government and key partners to eliminate gender inequalities through targeted, gender-focused programmes and by working to ensure that all development efforts take into account the experiences, needs, and contributions of women.
