UNDP’s new initiative aims to increase the workforce participation of Roma youth by providing vocational training, and create a sustainable model at the local level

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has launched a new initiative to enhance the employment opportunities of Roma youth in the Izmir province of Türkiye. “Creating a Neighborhood Model for Employing Roma Youth in Türkiye” project provides vocational training support to Roma youth living in the Konak district of Izmir, which has one of the largest Roma populations in Europe. This initiative aims to create a local model through skills development and job placement.

Under the project, 100 Roma youth will receive comprehensive vocational training in sectors with high demand in the private sector. The first training of the project started on 23 September 2024 in the textile sector. In the coming days, additional training programs will commence in various fields such as nail prosthetics, MIG welding, machine maintenance and repair, private security, and pastry assistantship, equipping the youth with the skills needed in the job market.

The program also aims to improve general employment skills of young people, including job searching, CV writing, and participating in job interviews. In addition, topics such as rights, discrimination, and psychological resilience will be covered as part of the life skills curriculum.

After the completion of the training, young graduates will be directed to companies in Izmir and supported to get a steady job. The project aims to accelerate the employment process, facilitating access to decent job opportunities for Roma youth.

This initiative, led by UNDP, is supported by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, Konak Municipality, Izmir Provincial Directorate of Family and Social Services, Izmir Chamber of Commerce, Aegean Young Business People Association, Izmir Union of Chambers of Tradesmen and Craftsmen, and Konak City Council. Through the Roma Employment Club, established as a consultation mechanism with the participation of these institutions, the project seeks to strengthen collaboration among public institutions, local governments, civil society organizations, and private sector actors providing services to the Roma community in Izmir, and facilitating the social and economic inclusion of Roma youth.
