Strategy for the Conservation of Biological Diversity in the Republic of Uzbekistan for the Period 2019- 2028 Target Similarity Assessment: In-depth Analysis

February 21, 2025

The United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is an international legally binding treaty adopted in Rio de Janeiro on June 5, 1992. Its primary objectives are to guide actions for biodiversity conservation, promote the sustainable use of its components, and ensure the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources.

The key policy instrument for CBD implementation at the national level is the National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs), which define national biodiversity conservation targets aligned with the Convention's commitments.

At the 15th Conference of the Parties to the CBD (COP15) in 2022, 196 countries adopted the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), aiming to set nature on a path to recovery by 2030 and achieve harmony with nature by 2050. The COP15 decision also mandated countries to review and update their NBSAPs in accordance with the KMGBF.

This publication analyzes the alignment between the 38 national targets outlined in Uzbekistan’s "National Biodiversity Conservation Strategy for 2019–2028" and the four goals and 23 targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework using artificial intelligence.
