Foreign investment plays a key role in promoting the economic development in Viet Nam for it provides capital and contributes to growth and productivity. While foreign investment projects benefit Viet Nam in many ways, they could pose social and environmental risks to the locality where they operate.

The Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and UNDP developed Foreign Investment Screening Instrument (FISI) to provide local governments with practical steps to screen and assess whether investments and projects integrate responsible business practices. It includes a list of factors that local authorities should take into account when they review and assess foreign investment projects to ensure that they meet human rights, health and safety standards, social and environment protection, and fundamental labour rights, thus contributing to the provinces’ sustainable development.
