UNDP Zimbabwe, the Swedish Embassy in Zimbabwe and the Ministry of Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry are hosting a Post-Conference Stockholm +50 meeting at the Green Expo to discuss outcomes of the national consultations in Zimbabwe and the international environmental meeting in Sweden. We also showcase a unique exhibition featuring Zimbabwe Children’s view on climate, environment, and sustainability.

To accelerate action for environment, climate, and biodiversity in Zimbabwe we want to bring together the voices of the national consultations and use the engagement as a springboard for new and continued commitments. The event will take place in Harare, in the main conference hall of Harare Show Grounds on the 27th of July, following the official opening ceremony of the Green Expo. A panel consisting of representatives from Zimbabwe who attended the meeting in Stockholm as well as representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry, UNDP Zimbabwe and Sweden in Zimbabwe will discuss the outcomes of the Stockholm +50 process. They will share insights and ideas that came out of the conference, and we will discuss ways to move forward, tapping into already existing and planned activities and projects. Invited people from all stakeholder groups will also participate; Women’s Rights Organizations; Youth Organizations; Government bodies; Private Sector; Academia, Media. The discussions will also be livestreamed.

In addition, an exhibition featuring Zimbabwe’s Children’s view on environmental issues in the country and their aspirations of a better future is premiering on the Swedish Embassy Wall as well as in a mobile exhibition that will be available to view at the Green Expo. The exhibition was created using art pieces and quotes from essays that were sent in by school going children from across the country.

BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT: On the 2nd and 3rd June 2022, a crucial international environmental meeting was held in Stockholm, Sweden. Stockholm+50 commemorated the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Environment and celebrate 50 years of global environmental action. Anchored in the Decade of Action, under the theme “Stockholm+50: a healthy planet for the prosperity of all – our responsibility, our opportunity,” this meeting followed months of consultations and discussions with individuals, communities, organisations and governments around the world – including in Zimbabwe.

By recognizing the importance of working together in tackling the Earth’s triple crisis – climate, nature, and pollution – the event worked as a platform to accelerate the implementation of the UN Decade of Action to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals, including the 2030 Agenda, Paris Agreement on climate change, the post-2020 global Biodiversity Framework, and encourage the adoption of environmentally friendly post-COVID-19 recovery plans. Now it is time to ride on this momentum and engagement and look to what we can do to accelerate action in Zimbabwe.
