Sustainable Solutions to Solid Waste Project
DESCRIPTION
The Rohingya influx from Myanmar has seen the population of Cox's Bazar's Teknaf and Ukhiya Upazilas hike to 1.5 million. The sudden increase in population has had adverse impact on the existing health and environment management systems, including underfunded and under-resourced Solid Waste Management (SWM) services. Monthly waste generation is estimated to be above 10,000 ton leading to waste pile-ups causing environmental pollution, posing serious health hazards, hiking disaster risks and causing social tensions. UNDP, in cooperation with the Government of Bangladesh and Sweden, jointly launched the project to respond to the crisis
OBJECTIVE
The project will work to develop waste management systems that will benefit both the host communities and Rohingya to have access to appropriate waste management services for cleaner and healthier environment, change behaviours and attitudes of host community to improve the way how waste is generated, disposed and managed; and create income generating opportunities for the host community by supporting recycling of solid waste
