The ambassador of the European Union to Bangladesh, Charles Whitely, has expressed interest in collaborating to better the living standards of the urban poor in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
“The Chittagong Hill Tracts, with its natural beauty, has great potentials,” the EU ambassador said while visiting various UNDP Bangladesh initiatives in Khagrachhari and Rangamati on Tuesday.
He also paid a courtesy visit to the Rangamati Hill District Council chairman’s representative member Sabir Kumar Chakma, who provided an overview of the administration, parishad’s structure and state of development.
“We are especially interested in working to better the living standards of the urban poor,” Whitely said, calling for continued cooperation from the Hill District Council.
Rangamati Hill District Council representative also briefed the ambassador about the works of UNDP in the CHT since the signing of the peace accord including nationalisations of 266 primary schools, malaria prevention, women empowerment, tackling climate change and agriculture.
The ambassador also visited the farmers field school and market collection points under UNDP’s SID-CHT programme in Khagrachhari during the visit.
EU delegation’s Head of Cooperation Maurizio Cian, Programme Managers Anna Perego and Meher Nigar Bhuiyan, UNDP Resident Representative Sudipto Mukerjee, ARRs Prasenjit Chakma and Ashekur Rahman and SID CHT Acting NPM Biplab Chakma were present among others.
