In the small village of Malibari Union in Gaibandha, Bangladesh, the image of a woman shopkeeper was once a rarity. Julekha, a determined mother of three, faced her share of skepticism and judgment as she embarked on her journey to independence. However, she has become a source of inspiration and empowerment for her community.

“A few years ago, people questioned a woman's ability to run a shop alone. Julekha has proven that a woman can stand on her own,” said Rahim Ali, a neighbor and regular customer at Julekha Begum’s grocery shop. “Her growth inspires our daughters and sisters, and that’s something we all stand behind.”

For years, women like Julekha struggled without public support, often met with quiet sympathy after facing significant challenges. When her husband left, leaving her to care for their children alone, Julekha refused to submit to societal norms. Instead, she sought opportunities to build a future for herself and her family.

Julekha’s journey began with SWAPNO(link is external), an initiative by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) aimed at empowering women with productive opportunities. At the outset, she earned a modest BDT 250 (approximately USD 2.06) daily, emphasizing the importance of savings for women. Yet, Julekha knew she wanted something more sustainable and impactful.

Currently, she manages her shop for half the day, balancing her household responsibilities alongside her work in the community. However, Julekha dreams of extending her shop’s hours and expanding her inventory to better serve her customers. "I want to turn this small shop into something bigger, not just for myself, but for others as well, so they can see what is possible," she says with determination.

Her transformation has been supported by UNDP, in partnership with the Local Government Division (LGD), and funded by the Embassy of Sweden in Dhaka and Marico Bangladesh. “I want them to know that they are not alone when they are starting something new” Julekha while expressing her desire for more women to take steps towards transformation:

Julekha's journey has transcended her own aspirations; it has instigated a shift in her community's mindset. Inspired by her success, other women have begun to consider starting their own businesses, seeking her advice and support. Conversations among elders now center around ways to foster women-led initiatives, and the community is slowly beginning to respect women beyond traditional roles.

In Malibari Union, change is not just witnessed; it is embraced. With the continuous support of UNDP and local partnerships, Julekha embodies a bright vision for the future—a future where women can stand tall, supported by their communities.

Julekha’s journey from struggle to success is inspiring women in Malibari Union to pursue their own dreams of independence and entrepreneurship.
