Jakarta, 2 October 2020 —UNDP Indonesia has been awarded the Gold Gender Equality Seal for mainstreaming gender equality to its programme and its contribution to gender equality goals in the country. UNDP Indonesia is the first country office within the UN Agency in Asia-Pacific to have obtained the gold seal.
The Gender Equality Seal is a global brand adapted by UNDP from the certification programme for private and public organizations to recognise UNDP’s commitment, expertise and effectiveness in protecting and advancing women's rights and gender equality.
“The Gold Seal is an affirmation of the hard work, dedication and commitment of our team in working towards achieving gender equality across multiple levels. It has been a long road and I am humbled that we have been recognized for our commitment to ensuring a just, equal and equitable approach to development. We look forward to our continued engagement with the Government of Indonesia and all our partners as we work towards advancing gender equality and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals,” said Sophie Kemkhadze, Deputy Resident Representative.
The key areas for the Gender Equality Seal certification include eliminating gender-based pay gaps, increasing women’s roles in decision-making, enhancing work-life balance, enhancing women’s access to non-traditional jobs, eradicating sexual harassment at work, using non-sexist communication and promoting women in business and cross-cutting the gender perspective in value chains.
“The entire staff of UNDP Indonesia have been extremely passionate in making sure that we become the first UNDP Country Office to obtain the Gold Seal in Gender Equality. This goes to show that Gender Equality has become everybody’s business among all of us at the Office,. And as we swing our programmes and policies into action, it is important that our work includes women’s voices and advocates for active participation of women, especially in non-traditional roles.,” said Yenny Widjaja, Gender Specialist at UNDP Indonesia.
Of the many commendable activities recognized by the assessment team, the Country Office’s work towards advocating for SOPs to be included in the treatment of survivors of violence towards women and girls during the current COVID-19 pandemic was recognized as an example of our continued efforts to ensuring an inclusive society.
Participation in the Gender Equality Seal Certification provides a platform to work towards gender transformative changes and fosters an inclusive working environment, including leadership for gender equality and gender capacities of staff. In 2016, UNDP Indonesia was certified Silver from the corporate Gender Equality Seal Certification programme.
