Quelimane – The rehabilitation of Quelimane General Hospital has officially begun, marking a crucial milestone in the recovery efforts following the devastation caused by Cyclone Freddy. As one of the most important healthcare facilities in Zambézia Province, the hospital serves over 250,000 people and operates with a dedicated workforce of 767 healthcare professionals.

In response to an urgent request from the Provincial Government, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has joined forces with local authorities and partners to restore this essential facility. The project, with an estimated cost of USD 3.5 million, is funded through contributions from UNDP and key international partners, including the European Union (EU), Canada, Finland, the Netherlands, India, China, and Norway. Their generous support is enabling the restoration of critical healthcare infrastructure and services for thousands of vulnerable families.
Key Rehabilitation Works
The rehabilitation project has been structured into two major lots, with execution awarded to the construction company NANTONG and oversight by Técnica Consultores e Engenheiros. The works will include:
- Structural upgrades, including wall repairs, flooring, and roofing replacements.
- System restoration, improving water supply, sewage, and electrical installations.
- Waste management improvements, in collaboration with the Municipality of Quelimane, ensuring proper disposal of hospital solid waste.
Official Handover and Future Plans
On January 22, 2025, the official handover of Lot 2 was conducted, following the handover of Lot 1 on December 6, 2024. This marks the formal commencement of construction, with contractors now mobilized on-site.
To further engage stakeholders, an official cornerstone ceremony will soon take place, bringing together donors, development partners, and the media. This event will highlight the project’s impact and encourage further support for ongoing recovery efforts.
