The complex and inter-related crises unfolding in relation to climate change, health, inequality, poverty and conflict are placing intensifying demands on governance systems and a formidable strain on political leadership. At the same time, there is growing contestation over how governance is delivered and legitimized. Previously settled opinions on the ideal model of governance are being questioned and tested.

This paper seeks to draw attention to the transformational role required of public leaders, institutions and societies, and the global need for us to invest in ensuring that public institutions around the world are able to cope with and respond effectively to the transformational demands required of them.
