Climate Promise
In Latin America and the Caribbean, UNDP, through the Climate Promise, is supporting 32 countries to improve their climate governance and take ambitious action in a range of areas, including adaptation and resilience, nature-based solutions, the energy transition, forests, food and water security, gender inclusion, blue carbon and oceans, climate finance, carbon markets, just transition, and private sector engagement. The Climate Promise provides support to strengthen locally led adaptation processes, integrating the voices, knowledge and leadership of Indigenous communities, women, and the most vulnerable communities. Land use change is a key contributor of GHG emissions in the region, where nature-based solutions, such as mangrove and wetland restoration projects, are leveraging the wealth of biodiversity and knowledge to reduce emissions and adapt to climate impacts.
Nature Pledge
UNDP’s Nature Pledge supports Latin American and Caribbean countries to place nature at the center of the development agenda. This approach allows us to protect and restore our planet, improve quality of life, eradicate poverty, reduce gender and other inequalities, and protect human rights, promoting inclusive and equitable development. The pledge advances three interconnected shifts necessary to transform global economic, social, and political systems that currently drive the unsustainable consumption of natural resources, threatening both lives and livelihoods: A Value Shift; An Economic and Finance Shift; and a Policy and Practice Shift. Our vision is a future where biodiversity and ecosystems serve as a safety net for humanity, safeguarding our food, water, livelihoods, jobs, climate, health, and security. Only nature-based human development, with an inclusive and rights-based approach, can drive the transformative change needed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Through this Pledge, UNDP will work with countries to scale and fast-track key actions, ensuring a fairer and more sustainable future for present and future generations.
