Access to safe and clean drinking water is recognized as both a human right and essential for the fulfilment of other rights, including the right to life, food, work and livelihoods. Still, approximately 844 million people worldwide live without access to clean water, 110 million in Southeast Asia alone. This report, “Clean Water and the Business and Human Rights Agenda: A Case Study of the Citarum River Basin in Indonesia”, provides an overview of the impact of water pollution in Asia on human rights, with a particular focus on the Citarum River. It is accompanied by the “Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence in Asia: A Clean Water Self-Assessment”, which outlines how a business enterprise might mitigate water pollution through a framework provided by the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs).
