Our focus

The UNDP Gender Equality Seal for Development is a certification programme that serves as a learning platform for development organizations to integrate gender equality into all the work they do and address deeply rooted gender inequalities. Our programme incentivizes and recognizes the success of gender equality initiatives globally to transform lives.

Theory of Change

The Gender Seal takes a comprehensive approach to boost development impact by aligning efforts for gender equality. We focus on seven key areas: Management Systems, Capacities, Enabling Environment, Knowledge Management and Communications, Programmes/Projects, Partnerships, and Results/Impact. The standards from the seven key areas -aligned to the organization's policies and global trends- guide Seal assessments, helping us to evaluate how each office or unit contributes to gender equality goals. This holistic assessment tracks results at three levels: within the organization itself (including policies and people), the organization's projects, and the development impact within the local or national context, considering socio-political factors affecting gender equality.

    Advancing gender equality requires commitment, vision, and investment. The Seal supports management to strategize, create success indicators, advance co-ownership of the gender agenda, and invest resources to bring gender equality goals to life.

    Building capacities to integrate gender equality in all development initiatives is at the heart of the Gender Seal programme. The Seal supports offices to develop gender responsive recruitment systems and institutionalize gender capacities across the entire office, especially programme teams.

    The Seal takes a comprehensive approach to building an equal workplace with zero tolerance for harassment, and promotes flexible work arrangements and equal representation of women in decision-making roles. 

    The Seal enables organizations to become a thought leader on gender equality and incentivizes the development and dissemination of cutting-edge knowledge on gender equality. 

    The Seal ensures gender analysis is at the heart of development interventions throughout the design, implementation and evaluation phases. 

    Working across government, civil society, development partners, and the private sector is a priority for the Gender Seal - organization’s are supported and guided to collaborate on common objectives. 

    With a methodology rooted in learning and improving, organizations are supported in advancing results and impact that transform the lives of men and women for the better, while simultaneously engendering advocacy and national policies.
